The First Amendment

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

This amendment is crucial to the freedom of Americans. This amendment restricts the the power given to the government and empowers the rights of the people. The government should not be able to control the church as long as the church is not infringing on others' freedoms. The government should not prohibit free speech especially speech about policies and questions about the functioning of the government and other issues. The government cannot control the press by allowing or prohibiting certain issues. People are allowed to petition the government. All these are examples of freedom and the checks and balances which keep others' and the government in line.

Funny Free Speech

This very much reflects what the forefathers wanted to protect the people from and aspects of why they had fled to this land in the first place. These rights keep a government from becoming tyrannical and stomping all over the people. Once we give up these rights, or even give up a little at a time, it will be very hard to gain anything back. The freedom of speech allows people to speak against or question the government without being killed, banished, or jailed. The freedom of the press if reporting the truth allows for transparency in all sorts of issues. It keeps the government from re-writing history and producing propaganda. The freedom of religion allows for people to worship, congregate, and practice their religion in peace.

If we do not enforce these rights or protect them, nothing will keep us different from other forms of governmental corruptions and control seen around the world today and before.
